Years ago I was reading a magazine article about Muhammad Yunus, a professor from India who had come up with a strikingly simple idea to help alleviate poverty among the world's poorest of the poor. Lending small amounts of his own money, mostly to women with families to feed, to start small businesses of their own, Yunus has now helped hundreds of thousands of people to lift out of poverty's devastating cycle into the full dignity of providing for themselves, their families, and infusing their communities with hope and inspiration.
Today it was announced that the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize has been awared to Muhammad Yunus, a man who understood the value of teaching a woman to fish rather than simply giving her a fish. I'm thrilled that this has happened, and want to make visitors to this website aware of the many lives Muhammad Yunus has helped to change. He is truly a living spiritual elder in our midst. Please go to www.grameenfoundation.org to learn more about this remarkable man and his extraordinary efforts to change the world, one person at a time. If you are able, please donate to support this grassroots, surprisingly successful endeavor...which has helped so many people to move from survival to thriving. This message has been edited.
